Aerial equipment, and aerial equipment rental, entered the market as safe alternatives to ladders and scaffolding. Not only are they safer, but they allowed workers to be more productive. Today, at nearly any worksite you visit, whether it be a hospital, airport, or mall, you’ll see aerial equipment. Most users of aerial equipment choose to rent rather than own because of the cost of transporting and storing the equipment. In addition, particular tasks on a job site can change from day to day, making rental a better choice. One day you may need a scissor lift and the next day a piece of equipment that fits inside an elevator. Let’s take a look at some of the most in demand aerial equipment.
Boom Lifts & Cherry Pickers
When it comes to aerial equipment, boom lifts, also known as cherry pickers, come to mind most often. Telescopic boom lifts are most useful in applications that require high reach capacity. These machines have a turntable that can rotate 360 degrees continuously in either direction. The machine can be maneuvered forward or backward and steered in any direction by the operator from the work platform – even while the boom is extended.
Articulating booms are used for reaching up and over machinery, equipment, and other obstacles mounted on floors. They’re often used for reaching over elevated positions not easily approached by a telescopic boom lift. They come in a variety of chassis widths enabling them to access narrow industrial aisles and congested work areas. They’re also drivable at full elevation.
Scissor Lifts
These easy to service, robust, hard working lifts are ideal for slab-style construction, building renovation, and maintenance work of all types. They also come with a rough terrain option. Scissor lifts are typically used where more workspace and more lifting capacity are required. They provide larger platform work areas and allow for heavier loads than boom lifts. Scissor lifts can be maneuvered in a similar manner as boom lifts, but the platform may be used only vertically, except for roll out deck extensions which can extend horizontally up to 6ft. Scissor lifts come in various widths and platform heights up to 43ft.
Telehandlers
Telehandlers, also called telescopic handlers, are similar to a forklifts, but have a boom, making them more like a crane than a forklift. On the end of the boom the operator is able to fit several attachments. Telehandlers are usually mounted on four-wheel chassis and equipped with telescopic booms that can reach lift heights of 50ft and up. This aerial equipment is often used in agriculture and construction industries. The most popular attachments include fork tines, earth moving bucket, work platform, and lifting jib.
